Youth Force Program Counselor

REPORTS TO:     Assistant Manager of Youth Employee Services

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

The primary role of the Youth Force Program Counselor is to assist in creating a positive hands-on work environment for transitional-aged youth within the mission and goals of Larkin Street Youth Services. The Youth Force Program Counselor’s chief responsibility is to model ideals of professionalism while providing positive reinforcement as well as constructive criticism to the program trainees.

As the Youth Force Program Counselor, the ability to work with a diverse group of young people across a variety of work settings is of key importance. S/he will work closely with the Assistant Manager of Youth Employee Services as well as the other Youth Force Program Counselor in a collaborative effort to help 16-24-year-olds prepare for the pursuit of employment and education. While this position works closely with all program participants, the primary emphasis is to support our higher needs youth as they enter into our employment services.

This position will require close coordination with our agency internal mental health team and external partners to establish coordinated care for youth requiring these services, as well as provide workforce development and rehabilitation training for our higher needs youth. There will also be a responsibility to identify higher needs youth who are new to services, work closely with them to provide a supportive employment environment and assist with appropriate program linkage.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work side by side with Youth Employees to lead them in completing short and long term manual labor projects.
  • Provide appropriate feedback to Youth Employees and evaluate their performance.
  • Co-facilitate professional, educational, and personal development workshops that are pertinent to success in the workplace.
  • Assist in generating and maintaining client records including: initial assessments, client progress notes, and program database.
  • Attend meetings at various Larkin Street program sites to facilitate coordinated care.
  • Conduct community outreach to maintain positive relationships with existing local partners as well as to solicit business from new contacts in the San Francisco community.
  • Collaborate with community partners to organize appropriate work projects and coordinate cultural and educational excursions that will provide broad exposure for Larkin Street youth.
  • Transport multiple youth to work sites in the bay area using Larkin Street vehicles.
  • Assist Youth Employee Services manager and supervisor in assessing youth for ability to participate in employment and education programming.
  • Any other duties or responsibilities as directed by your supervisor.

PHYSICAL & LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to solely manage a group of up to 7 youth in the completion of various work projects.
  • Lift, push, pull 75lbs as will regularly be required by the position.
  • Able to work with commercial power washer preferred.
  • Familiarity with graffiti abatement methods, chemical safety procedures, certification and/or experience in universal safety precautions and personal protection equipment preferred.
  • California Driver’s license with clean driving record (required)
    • Ability to operate a motor vehicle while towing a trailer.

EDUCATION: 

  • BA/BS in Management, Human Resources, Community and Economic Development, Education, Organizational Behavior, or related field preferred

  • Knowledge of and experience working with youth, especially at-risk, homeless or runaway youth.
  • Knowledge of Harm Reduction model, including appropriate applications in an employment setting.
  • Experience, or comfort with database management (SharePoint, MicroSoft Office Suite, Efforts to Outcomes, SalesForce).
  • Conflict Mediation certification preferred.
  • Restorative Practices knowledge preferred.

This position is represented by SEIU 1021 under a collective bargaining agreement.
