Larkin Street Youth Services: The First 25 Years
Larkin Street Youth Services: The First 25 Years was written by Bill Campbell, one of Larkin Street’s founders and first board members. The book chronicles the agency’s colorful history from its beginning as a grassroots effort, to the important opening of its drop-in center in the Polk Gulch neighborhood, to its current, internationally-recognized network of 25 programs and 15 sites across the city of San Francisco.
There are several important themes that are clearly visible in Larkin Street’s history: First is the singular passion that its board, staff, and volunteers share—a passion to help youth who have been dealt bad hand and deserve better. Second is the remarkable insight Larkin Street has gained into the barriers that at-risk and homeless youth face. By recognizing and truly understanding these barriers, we have developed innovative and effective solutions. The third theme is accountability.
