Below, we’re including the full text of the letter from our Executive Director, Sherilyn Adams, and Board Chair, Eric Roos, with their update on the past year, and what’s ahead:
Dear Larkin Street Family,
As we pause to reflect on this year, our hearts are filled with overwhelming gratitude and admiration for you, our supporters, and the incredible young people we serve. 2023 marks a remarkable chapter in the journey of Larkin Street Youth Services.
We embarked on this year with a heartfelt commitment: to be the steady hand for youth during their challenging moments and to light the way to a future filled with opportunities. Thanks to our collective effort, over 1,700 young people, each with their radiant stories and boundless dreams, are now stepping confidently towards brighter tomorrows. Of these, almost 700 were provided with warm, safe housing and shelter, a significant increase versus prior years.
It’s heartwarming to note that Casa Esperanza and Mission Inn celebrated their first anniversaries this year. Since opening last year, these sites have been more than buildings. They are sanctuaries where numerous young people have found solace and renewed purpose.
This year, we also launched the Trust Youth Initiative in collaboration with Google and a host of respected partners. Through this initiative, young people gain not just the tools for economic progress but also the wisdom to navigate an increasingly complex world.
We were also thrilled to welcome three new trailblazers to our executive team. Each brings a unique perspective and deep expertise, further amplifying our ability to provide best-in-class services for youth experiencing homelessness. You will read more about them in the coming pages.
As for the future, we are laying the foundation to scale our offerings to serve even more young people. We will focus on a refreshed strategic plan that prioritizes the unique needs of emerging populations, including pregnant or parenting youth and monolingual and/or undocumented youth. Geographically, we envision expanding our reach within the Bay Area, ensuring our services touch even more lives. Moreover, we are poised to assist other organizations by sharing our best practices, recognizing Larkin Street’s leading reputation in this space.
